先聖先賢圖像普通郵票CHINESE CULTURE HEROES DEFINITIVE POSTAGE STAMPS

This set of medium-valued postage stamps featuring eight painting of the Chinese culture heroes was issued to replace the Flying Geese in Lines Series. The original paintings which were kept in the Forbidden City of Peking(now Peiping) are now kept in the National Palace Museum. The eight culture heroes featured on the stamps are as follows:

1. Emperor Yao (r. 2357-2258 B.C.): He ruled his people by means of virtue and introduced a new political ideal by choosing the unrelated but virtuous Shun to be his successor in place of his own son.

2. Emperor Shun (r. 2255-2208 B.C.): He was the model of filially devoted son. He improved calendar, standatdized weights and measures.

3. Yu, the Great (r. 2205-2198 B.C.): Yu, the founder of Hsia dynasty, had brought the flood under control and opened up the waterway. H divided the country into nine administrative districts, established a system of land taxes, set up the territorial boundaries and a nationwide givernmental structure based on the principle of hereditary kingship.
