清明上河圖，宋家擇端所繪汴京士女春遊之景，中有不同行業及各式衣冠之士女，並有各種店鋪、城樓、水門、街、巷、橋、船及花、木、鳥、獸等，包羅萬象，實為描繪當時社會之寫實圖畫。南宋時，民間眷念故土、賭之宏偉富麗之圖畫，緬懷北國，增益奮愾。於是張擇端一夜成名。眾多摹臨張畫之作亦應運而生。茲採故宮博物院珍藏清乾隆元年、陳枚、孫梏、金昆、戴洪、程志道等五位宮廷畫家，合作完成之清院本為圖案，印行清明上河圖郵票、以廣流傳，並響應中華文化復興運動之推行。

In response to President Chiang Kai-shek's call for the launching of Chinese Curutal Renaissance Movement, a set of "A City of Cathay" - a famous handscroll painting in the Palace Museum - Postage stams was issued for popular appreciation. The original "A City of Cathay" was painted by Chang Tse-tuan. In the painting there were men and women of every profession and attire, shops of every descripton, city walls and gates, streets and lanes, bridge and boats - in short, everything under sun.

It was a picturial socialogocal history of the time, with every detail preserved by the artist's brush, and Chang Tse-tuan of "A City of Cathay". Designs for this was painted cooperatively by the five court painters in the first year of Emperor chien Lung (A. D. 1736). They were: Chen Mei, Sun Hu, Chin Kun, Tai Hung and Cheng Chih-tao.
