中鋼公司於建廠支出即非常注重環境保護，不斷地投資汙染防治設備，並在廠區廣植林木花草，以創造綠地、淨化空氣。如今，廠區內到處綠意盎然，綠化的成果除了你我可以目睹外，應是野鳥最清楚了。近年來發現在中鋼廠區出現的野鳥不單是麻雀，還有許多不同鳥種。為了闡釋瀕臨絕種鳥類的美麗，本公司特別製作了"蘭嶼角鴞"銀幣，希望藉由蘭嶼角鴞之美，讓您更愛鳥類，更愛自然。

Ever since the earliest stage of plant construction, China Steel Corporation has continuously devoted sizable investments in pollution control, and in extensive planting of trees, shrubbery and flowers to create greenery and to cleans the air. Apart from the obvious result of thriving greenery everywhere, furthur evidence of the success of such investment is the appearanc of a large variety of birds-not just sparrows-all over China Steel's plant area. In order to raise the public consciousness of the beauty of birds, particularly those on the verge of extinction. China Steel produces this souvenir coin of Lanyu scops owl, an example of birds that are facing such destiny. China Steel hopes that the breathtaking beauty of the Lanyu scops owl, will make people cherish all the more the birds and the surrounding nature.

蘭嶼角鴞與亞洲角鴞外型近似，屬小型的貓頭鷹，身長約19~22公分，個體間顏色略有差異，多半是褐色帶有暗褐色及灰黃斑蚊，頭上有角羽，警戒時會豎起，臉盤褐色，眼先及面灰白色，眼睛虹彩黃色，嘴成橄欖灰色，胸及複部黃褐色有黑褐色橫斑及箭簇般軸斑，肩羽下有一列白色橫斑，腳爪成橄欖灰色。蘭嶼角鴞僅分佈於蘭嶼島上，屬台灣瀕臨絕種之珍貴鳥類，同種有三個亞種，分佈於琉球群島及菲律賓北部，主要以島中之成熟闊葉林為棲息地。每年2~3月開始探洞、配對，於5月產卵，每窩生2~4枚蛋，孵卵期約一個月，幼雛經30天後可離巢。

LANYU SCOPS OWL
(Otus Elegans Botelensis)

The Lanyu Scops Owl is of an endemic subspecies of the Rhyuku Scops Owl. It is actually a small owl, measuring only 19 to 22 centimeters in lengh. Color of its feathers differs. A typical Lanyu Scops. Owl has brown feathers with dark brown and " gray-yellow stripes. The crest on its crown rises when the owl is on alert. Its malar region is brown, with off-white ocular fundus, red-yellow eyes and olive bill. The breast and belly are tawny with black brown strips and arrowhead-shaped spots. Under the scapular is a streak of white stripes. Its claws are olive gray. Lanyu Scops owls are mainly located on Lanyu, an island of Taiwan's southeast coast, also known as Orchid Island. It is a precicious bird in danger of extinction. Three of its subspecies are located in the Ryuku Islands and in the north of the Philippins. The island's mature broadleaf forests provide their habital. Breeding season is from February to March. From April to May they lay eggs, usually two to four eggs to a nest. Incubation is about one month. The owlets mature and leave the nest in 30 days.
