In ancient times shells played an important role in the development of Chinese monetary and ritual systems. In oder to introduce shells to our compatriots so as to arouse their interest in the study of Chinese culture as well as marine animals, a set of "Taiwan Shells Postage Stamps" with the design of four rare species of shells found in the seas around Taiwan was issued on Febrary 25, 1971.

貝殼再我國貨幣及禮制演進中，均居重要地位，茲為介紹台灣罕見之真奇貝殼，以增進國人對於我國古代文化有更身之認識起見，特選產在台灣近海之珍貴貝殼四種，籌印台灣貝殼郵票一組，定於本年二月二十五日發行。
